How to Find Your Ring Size at Home
Whether it's a surprise proposal or simply a head start before a fitting, finding a ring size at home is straightforward once you know what to actually measure.
Here are two reliable methods, and what to watch out for with each.
Method One: Measuring an Existing Ring
If you have access to a ring the person already wears on the correct finger, this is the most reliable at-home method, since it measures an actual fitted ring rather than estimating around a finger.
Steps
Place the ring on a flat surface and measure the internal diameter — the widest point across the inside of the band — in millimetres using a ruler. A more accurate alternative is to trace the inside edge of the ring onto paper, then measure the diameter of that traced circle. Either measurement can then be matched against a standard size chart.
It's important the ring is one worn on the same finger you're sizing for, since finger sizes vary noticeably from hand to hand and finger to finger on the same person.
Method Two: Measuring the Finger Directly
If no existing ring is available, a length of string, dental floss, or a thin strip of paper works as a simple measuring tool.
Steps
Wrap the string snugly around the base of the finger, mark where it overlaps, then lay it flat and measure the length in millimetres with a ruler. This gives the finger's circumference, which can be matched to a size chart that lists circumference alongside diameter.
Measure two or three times and take the most consistent result, since it's easy to pull the string slightly too tight or too loose on a single attempt.
Timing Matters More Than People Expect
Fingers naturally swell slightly in heat and shrink slightly in cold, and can also be temporarily affected by exercise, salt intake or time of day. Measuring at the end of a hot day, right after a workout, or first thing in the morning can each give a slightly different reading. This is especially worth remembering during Pretoria's hot summer months, when finger size can shift more noticeably than on a cooler day.
For the most representative result, measure at room temperature, in the evening, and avoid taking a measurement immediately after exercise or a particularly hot or cold day.
A Helpful Middle Ground for Surprise Proposals
If discretion is essential and a direct measurement isn't possible, borrowing a ring the person already wears (even briefly) and measuring it, as in Method One, tends to be more accurate than guessing from a description or comparing to your own finger size.
A home measurement is a starting point
Even a careful at-home measurement is an estimate, not a guarantee — which is completely fine for getting started.
